I've heard people with Near Eastern personae in the SCA say that clothing that looks historically accurate is too difficult or too expensive to make, or that expecting people to make historically accurate Near Eastern clothing is elitist, and besides, historically accurate clothing is ugly.

I've heard people who want to enjoy the clothing, food, and music of the Near East but were uncomfortable portraying someone whose religion was different than their own. I've heard people come up with really bizarre persona stories to explain why they are a pale-skinned and light haired Near Easterner. Well, folks, it doesn't have to be that way ... |

Medieval tastes and traditions in furniture decoration varied over time and between regions. Very few examples of original surfaces survive, as most surviving pieces have been refinished numerous times over hundreds of years. While modern finishes are easy to spot, it is very hard to discern a 400-year-old finish on a 600 year-old artifact. The problem is compounded by the selective survival of artifacts; the pieces that have survived tend to be those that were highly valued and well cared for. This tends to exclude many common household objects and much of what was owned by the middle and lower classes.

About a year ago, I found a photo of a wire artifact from Viking Age Denmark that was woven in a pattern that was completely new to me. It took a trip to Denmark to find a book that explained how to accomplish this pattern, and some experiment ation to find the most efficient and effective techniques . I learned a lot about period silversmit hing in the process. The result is a beautiful and unusual form of wire jewelry that is fun, if time-consu ming, to create.
