The garden consists of three major plots. The first is the kitchen garden, which groups by usage, plants needed by medieval households. The second part, the pleasure ground, consists of a combination of flowering plants as well as some small fruits. The third part is the enclosed contemplation garden. An exhibit of medieval field crops, which we believe will be the only one in North America, has been begun outside of the garden.

This short note attempts to pull together the current thinking on the date of the Medieval garden at Whittingto n Castle, as an aid to interpreta tion and further research. Given the good preservati on of the site and the associated viewing mount it is important that the evidence is examined in detail. The views are mine and are open to discussion or reinterpre tation.
