Live animal hunt activities are prohibited at SCA Events. These include, but are not limited to: deer hunting, boar hunts, and game bird shoots.

The sight of a hawk soaring above the hillsides inspires a reverence for the untamed beauty of nature. Soaring on air currents above the countryside, these majestic raptors search for prey with vision far keener than our own. The sight of one person, standing in a field, calling the hawk to perch fills those who witness it with awe. The hawk swoops to land on a gauntleted arm, rewarded with tasty bits of meat. The sport of falconry binds man and raptor into an intimate dance of life and death.

Animals were present everywhere in the everyday life of the Middle Ages: wild animals, like bears, wolves, wild boars, and deer; fish; poultry and farm animals; and the companions of the warrior, the peasant, and the hunter, like horses, falcons, and dogs.

Some of the sports, games, music, verse, dancing, toys, and other pastimes of the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. Despite the full agricultural year that most people faced, there was always time for folk to partake in games, challenges, tests of skill and general larking about.

Saint Bavon' s Company of Falconry is an SCA group dedicated to researchin g and recreating the noble arts of falconry and hawking as they were practiced within the medieval and renaissanc e period.

Philip Stubbes started writing around 1581 producing small tracts in which he sharply denounced the manners, pastimes, fashions and culture in England. His major work, The Anatomie of Abuses, was first published in 1583.

P hilip Stubbes had a gift for keen observatio n. Although his comments should not be considered to reveal mainstream thought or opinions of the time, (even his contempora ries thought him extreme) his virulent attacks on the abuses in fashion and English society provide us with a detailed, colorful and picturesqu e glimpse into the England of Shakespear e's youth.

This is a list to discuss the uses and purposes of canines in the period studied by the SCA, such as, but not limited to, the use of terriers, lurchers & coursers, cart dogs & draft uses, hunting & hounds, herding, guard, and companion dogs. Discussions on breeding, rearing, feeding, training, equipping and any other canine related study or activity would be most welcome. As per requests, we have also expanded to welcome and include animals of the hunt, partners and team members to our canine pursuits, such as hawks, ferrets, and horses, so we can better understand and work with gentles working in these endeavors as well.
