Musical Instruments

This comprehens ive report represents a landmark in the publicatio n of medieval finds from excavation s in York. It encompasse s very large assemblage s of medieval artefacts of a wide variety of materials, including iron, non-ferrou s metal, stone, jet, amber, fired clay, glass and textile. These were recovered from four major sites in York.

Very few musical instrument s have survived from the Middle Ages. In their efforts to recover how instrument s appeared, how they were constructe d and played, and what kind of sound they produced, Sine Nomine has turned to pictorial evidence.

We don't know much about how Viking music sounded, but we do know some of their musical instruments based on archeological finds.
