The peanut shield is a wooden, center-grip shield with a metal boss to cover the hand and strike one's opponent. Most were made of wood, some (possibly court models) were covered with sheet bronze and enamel work.

The intent of this article is to give the shield a bit of increased exposure. A myriad of types and styles of shields have been used throughout history, and it would be nearly impossible for us to cover them all here. Instead, we have chosen to cover several classic shield designs in use during key periods in history.
