Viking Ships

The Norse ship was perhaps the greatest technical and artistic achievement of the European dark ages. These fast ships had the strength to survive ocean crossings while having a draft of as little as 50cm (20 inches), allowing navigation in very shallow water.

Personal site devoted to learning about boat making, particular ly of Norse tradition during the Viking era.

For our senior project we are building a Viking boat which is a replica of one built in Norway about 895 AD. It is our intent to actually sail this boat and then donate it to a museum.

Bringing medieval and Viking-age history to life -- especially maritime history -- is an important component at this museum.

You may be wondering why anyone would ever want to spend the time and money to build a Viking (or any other medieval) craft...but for all the amateur boatbuilders out there, have fun! Assorted links on building re-creations of medieval boats.

The Viking Navy designs, builds and sails Viking Ships. Formed in 1995 for people that would like to do a little Viking.
The Oseberg Viking Ship, pictured here, has been called the most beautiful ship ever built. A future goal of the Viking Navy is to build an Oseberg replica.
