The early crusade historians tried various ways to present their subject. One important model was that of pilgrimage. From the 8th century on, the number and size of pilgrimages from the West to Jerusalem increased. The great German Pilgrimage of 1064-65 is one of the most important of these journeys, and the account here gives some account of the hazards.
